“The New Year”

The new year, the new you … We always say it, right? I will quit smoking, I will get out of my toxic relationship, I will lose weight and be healthier, etc…I am (well, I was before Covid) a regular attendee in the gym. 5 days a week 8:30-9:30 am I am there. Normally, the people I see around me are the same people day in and day out. But the first days after New Years something really changes. The parking lot is suddenly super crowded, the classes in the studio are packed. All these new people I never saw before! It’s great to see all the new members, with all their new goals. But something happens though, as the days start ticking by. I feel almost sad as the number of cars become less and less over time, and the new faces keep slowly disappearing. What happens? Why can we not stick to our goals? How can we do better?

  • Be very specific about your goal, whether it’s a body shape or a career change or a life goal. The more specific you are, the better it is. Have a very clear view of what you want.
  • Set a realistic plan. What are the steps to get you there? Again, be specific.
  • Be aware of your resources around you. For example, the health store around the corner, maybe a new gym membership, maybe you have a friend in the field that can help you.
  • Tell someone about your goal. The simple act of sharing your goal makes you more accountable. Make sure that you choose someone that will give you positive criticism, but at the same time will be brutally honest with you.
  • Take responsibility for your own path. We have the power to change our lives. Get out of your comfort zone. If it didn’t serve you so far, it will not start serving you now.
  • Update your goals accordingly. Life is a flow, so flow with it. Be creative about how you achieve your goal. Remember there is no one rigid way.

What if I struggle? Hmmm, sorry to say, but of course you will struggle. If it was easy you would have done it long time ago. But, remember your “WHY”. Why you started this journey in the first place? Think about how you will feel when you achieve your goal. Call that friend/coach. Remind yourself of the first day, you came a long way. Yes, there is a long path in front of you, but you will do it, and you will feel so f.ing proud!

I want to see your car in the gym parking lot all year long, don’t be the ones that disappear. Get out of that damn comfort zone!
